I am sure you’ve spent holidays in an interesting and festive way on your radio stations and I am positive that you didn’t have much rest. ]]> January is the month when we all work hard – we are trying to collect all the belated payments, create new campaigns, quizzes and to improve our programs. Seems to me that January is pretty much the same on all the radio stations around the world – we talk with our friends often, and we always realize that we have the same problems, but also the same timing and commitments. The same nice radio activities and preparations.

I had a great start of this year – my big desire for us all and for RAB Serbia became true. We had a meeting of all the presidents of all radio associations in the Association of Creative Industry in the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Serbia. As you probably remember, during our Radio Days in Palic we gave the initiative to gather all the associations of radio stations to fight together for our most important goals and solve problems. Of course SOKOJ’s (Serbia Music Authors Organization) new fees presented as the first issue and I am happy I can tell you that after several meetings, on our last meeting on Friday, January 18th, with the representatives of SOKOJ we have made many arrangements which show us that everything will be much better and different. We expect that the Protocol will be signed soon, and I will inform you about everything. The best thing is that representatives of all associations of radio stations in Serbia acted together with the same goal and the same desire – which is something we have always wished for – all the stations united in the fight for the rights of radio stations. In the future we will talk about other problems of radio, taking part in creating new laws etc. But this unison brings new hope and a lot of optimism.

Soon RAB Serbia will continue with the radio listening research. On the last Board meeting on Thursday, January 17th, we have looked at all the offers and we have chosen the best one. I will inform you about all the details soon.

We plan to meet in Nis soon – the second part of February and to talk about Problems of local and regional radio stations. Soon we will contact members of RRA and RATEL, as well as guests who will be able to give us answers to the numerous questions I’m sure we will have.

I’m looking forward to our next meeting. They are always very useful, but they are also meetings of true friends in which we all enjoy.

INTRODUCTION - DECEMBER http://rabsrbija.com/en/RAB-News/RAB-News/251/INTRODUCTION+-+DECEMBER.html December is the month I look forward the most. I love the New Year atmosphere at the radio, the sounds of bells, ads with Santa Clause. ]]> December is most certainly the best month for all radio stations because there are more ads, and revenue as well. Many radio stations live from those revenues during January and February. You have to admit that during January we have more holidays and less work so everything is much more quite. That is why I wish you all December full of bells, Santa Clauses and ads.

I live December because of RAB Serbia’s birthday too. I am sure that we will celebrate it while counting our successes and making plans for the future. I hope you will all be there. You are invited. We are looking forward to seeing you. This year we will celebrate our birthday on December 21st in Novi Sad, on Fishermen island with a wonderful lunch and music in the restaurant “Kucerak kod cesme”.

We have a lot of work in the next year – we have to keep up the tempo and be even better. We have already planed big actions for every month, but I don’t want do tell you everything now. Maybe this is the moment to wish you all the best in the New Year, and to our RAB a lot of success and many more important actions.

A couple of days ago I was a guest in the radio show “Invisible people” on the Second program of Radio Belgrade and I talked about RAB and the great enthusiasm which surrounds it and all the members. I could see a trace of disbelief in the eyes of Stevan Cicovacki, the author and host – is it possible that someone could be so full of great plans and faith in success. At the end of the interview he asked me if I think that radio will survive. “Not only it is going to survive, because radio has survived everything, but it will become much stronger, the programs will become better and more up to date. That is the message from me and RAB Serbia”. I don’t know if I have managed to convince our colegue, but I’m absolutely sure of that.

We are continuing with even more strength, optimism and enthusiasm. We are RAB Serbia and we are starting our third year. Good luck to us all.

INTRODUCTION - NOVEMBER http://rabsrbija.com/en/RAB-News/RAB-News/250/INTRODUCTION+-+NOVEMBER.html Our Autumn Radio Days are over. These were the forth Radio Days organized by RAB Serbia. This time they were held in Palic, hotels Elitte Palic, November 10th till 12th. ]]> Unison and friendship of radio stations could be felt in Palic could be felt during this time. We had great pleasure to welcome Gordana Predic, State Secretary for Culture. She had opened Radio Days on November 10th, at 4 pm with following words: “Two years ago I found out about RAB Serbia from Maja Rakovic and I have followed its work since then because I was thrilled with the principles it is based on. Like the letter R in RAB Serbia logo, could be in only one color, it is made out of numerous dots of various colors because that is exactly the representation of radio in Serbia – a lot of radio stations united in the same task.”

Over 100 participants from radio stations members of RAB Serbia, our guests from Croatia (Ivan Butkovic, president of HURIN, Marijan Beljan, vice president of HURIN), Bosnia and Herzegovina (Adnan Osmanagic, the owner of RSG Sarajevo, Adis Kadric, executive director of RSG Sarajevo, Emir Povlakic, Agency for communication of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Samir Mujagic, production director of RSG Sarajevo), Macedonia (Gjorgi Savev, owner of City Radio from Skoplje), Slovenia (Lenja Papp, ROB Slovenia, Robert Brndusic Dedus, MultiBrand Media International), shared their experiences with us and gave us useful ideas which had helped them improve the position of radio in their countries.

Again, we had prominent experts in their fields with the most interesting topics – Tomislav Jakobovic (Brand Media Consulting, Croatia), Rade Santrac, our best sound designer and the owner of the gold medal for the best radio jingle in the world, and Ivan Zeljkovic, radio and tv host. Our guests from Ninamedia talked about radio listening radio research and the use of the data base on RAB Serbia web site.

We had two groups – while the lecturers presented their themes: Sound design and radio imaging in the function of radio format (Rade Santrac), First steps in creating successful radio brand (Tomislav Jakobovic), Preparation and realization of daily radio show (Ivan Zeljkovic) and talked with the participants, in the other hall we organized round table to talk about the future of radio in the region. Our guests from the region attended this, and Gordana Predic, with a lot of enthusiasm and desire to help had answered numerous questions from the representatives of radio stations and gave suggestions on how and where to ask for some answers and fight for the legal position of radio. Every free moment has been spent in talks and very friendly atmosphere. Wonderful ambience of the hotels and the restaurant “Mala gostiona” which celebrates 160 years of existence helped the atmosphere a lot. And of course, where there is a lot of work and studying, there is also a lot of fun, so everyone enjoyed wonderful nights with live music. We had a chance to hear representatives of radio stations sing.

Everybody will remember those three days of good time and friendship. Common comment at the end was that we should repeat this as soon as possible. I’m sure this is the right receipt – interesting lectures and the knowledge taken from this, will be applied in all radio stations and they will become better, the experiences we share with the guests from the region are priceless, and the good times spent together become a wonderful memory. Radio is friend to its listeners, and radio stations are the best friends to each other.

INTRODUCTION - OCTOBER http://rabsrbija.com/en/RAB-News/RAB-News/249/INTRODUCTION+-+OCTOBER.html I am proud to announce that our Autumn Radio Days will be held November 10th till November 12th in Hotels Elitte Palic, Palic. ]]> The preparations have begun a month ago and I have great news for you – the lecturers will be exactly those you asked for and they have gladly accepted our invitation. And there will be some very nice surprises as well. Soon you will have the agenda and I’m sure you’ll be happy when you see what we have prepared for you.

Again we expect a lot of participants – besides you, radio stations members of RAB from all over Serbia, we will have guests from region as well. For sure there will be time to enjoy in conversation, good times, sharing experiences… We have made space for a little more spare time, exactly for moments like that.

I’m happy that again we will provide for this Radio days the same like previous times – together with barter and I’m sure we will show the power of radio campaign again.

Soon you will receive mail invitations, so please plan everything on time.

I’m looking forward to seeing you and talk about everything and learn in the beautiful atmosphere of Palic.

And one more thing – radio ads for our self promotional campaign are being prepared. All the radio stations founders of RAB Serbia (Radio 021, Radio 3, NAXI radio and Radio S) are creating two ads and soon on our radio stations we will hear the invitation “Advertise on radio…”

INTRODUCTION - SEPTEMBER http://rabsrbija.com/en/RAB-News/RAB-News/248/INTRODUCTION+-+SEPTEMBER.html I hope you’ve enjoyed your summer. I’m sure that no matter where you have been you’ve been thinking about radio all the time – about new formats, new programs, new trainings for you marketing teams… ]]> A lot of you have used this summer for outdoor promotions. And all that in the anticipation of the autumn, the most lucrative part of the year when it comes to radio profits. So, September is here, and also the beginning of the biggest marketing campaigns.

RAB Serbia has used this summer in the best possible way. We worked hard during the three summer months – and you have the results in front of you. Data base of all radio stations in Serbia is on our web site. With just one click you can find radio stations you want, contact them and see their target groups, formats and learn all about them. I’m sure this Data base will be helpful for everyone, but despite all the effort, not all radio stations have sent us their data. Still I’m (as always) an optimist and I’m sure will complete this Data base soon.

I’m sure you are as proud as I am that on our web site you can also check whenever you want ratings of all radio stations in Serbia. I am proud that RAB Serbia can present to the world results of the research of radio listening in Serbia, which we have done with Ninamedia. Here I would like to thank IREX and USAID for their great help, because we wouldn’t be able to do all this without their help.

RAB Serbia web site, with the Data base of radio stations in Serbia and the results of the radio listening research and the data base of the research is now most certainly the place where everybody interested can find all the information they need.

September brings preparation for our Autumn Radio Days as well. We are negotiating with hotels and are in touch with future lecturers… I’m already looking forward to our meeting, planned for the beginning of November.

And until then – we are preparing our self- promotional campaign. Soon, on air of all radio stations members of RAB Serbia, you will hear new jingles, similar to those we made two years ago to introduce our organization. So – “Advertise on radio. Radio is more powerful media than it seems – that is the message from RAB Serbia.”

INTRODUCTION – JULY http://rabsrbija.com/en/RAB-News/RAB-News/217/INTRODUCTION+%E2%80%93+JULY.html At the end of June I was in Sarajevo – RAB Serbia visiting Radio Stari Grad. Our hosts were Adnan Osmanagic, owner and director of Radio Stari Grad and Adis Kadric, executive director of the radio. ]]> Radio Stari Grad is leading radio station in Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina. They have great radio hosts and domestic pop music and they have found the way to the listeners. This radio has different programs for Bosnia and Herzegovina and for Sarajevo. It is located in a building specially built for the radio with many studios and office spaces dominated by huge photos of their radio stars.

While talking with Adnan and Adis I have realized that problems in radio business are very similar everywhere and that it is very important to exchange experiences and to find the right solutions. The biggest concern for radio stations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, same as here, is how to get the biggest possible share in the overall budget for advertising.

Same as in Serbia, radio is very much loved and listened in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but it is still necessary to emphasize the importance of radio and radio advertising to clients and marketing agencies.

I have talked with Adnan and Adis about the big promotion of radio and joint lectures “Why radio” for the end of September.

We have planned the same kind of promotion during our visit to Zagreb, so the end of September will be marked by this action in Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Macedonia. I left Sarajevo full of optimism with new ideas for regional cooperation.

From today you can look at the Database of radio stations in Serbia on RAB Serbia web site. This is the unique database in our country and we are very proud that we have managed to create it. All marketing agencies, clients and radio stations will be able to find the radio stations they need in it.

I have to admit that it was very hard to get the information from all radio stations, so the database will be updated regularly. Unfortunately, even after numerous mails and phone calls, some radio stations did not send us the information, although they understand the advantages this database will provide.

In a couple of days we will publish results of research about radio listening in Serbia for the whole Serbia and Belgrade, done by Ninamedia. The complete database will be published soon.

Research, as well as the Database of radio stations in Serbia, was funded by RAB Serbia, IREX and USAid. We sincerely hope that there will be other researches after this initial one. We will ask all radio stations and marketing agencies if they want to take part in financing this research in the future, and this first one is RAB Serbia’s gift to all users – radio stations and marketing agencies.

On Friday, July 6th we have organized a traditional summer meeting with marketing agencies. This time our guest lecturer was Dusan Masic, from BBC London. He had an excellent lecture with the topic “Why radio”.

After the lecture we had a lunch during which we have talked about the ways of creating the best possible radio ads and the ways to include radio in the media mix. Following the conclusion from the research Dusan Masic shared with us, that the effect of the average TV campaign is the same as the one of the good radio campaign, but that radio campaign is seven times cheaper compared to TV, we have ended our meeting with the marketing agencies and made plans to continue with this kind of meetings in all the big cities in the region at the end of September.

INTRODUCTION - JUNE http://rabsrbija.com/en/RAB-News/RAB-News/216/INTRODUCTION+-+JUNE.html Ivana and I just got back from Zagreb. RAB Serbia visiting Narodni radio, Antena Zagreb and Totalni FM. It was wonderful to see how does the big radio industry function and the way radio has won the battle in Croatia. Radio is very respected and important in Croatia. And of course, loved. I have to admit that things are much different here. Radio is very much loved, but we have so much more to learn when it comes to other two things. ]]> In a beautiful five store building in Novi Zagreb there are 14 studios and 170 people take care of news, music and fun. It is no surprise they are the most listened to. You can feel enthusiasm and love for the job at every step - non formal atmosphere and optimism, but everyone know who is doing what and why at every moment. Hundreds of jingles, trailers, ads... are created here daily. Music testing is also done on a daily basis and DJ’s together with producers and ambitious PD’s create program listened by the huge number of people. During our visit an exclusive interview with the Prime Minister was in progress.

Besides all that, we have seen Jura Junior fantastically coordinating all the activities and monitoring program of all radio stations. And everything seems so easy. It is completely obvious that all that requires huge knowledge, but enormous will and ambition of all employees as well. If we add to that great knowledge and experience of Jura Hrvacic Senior, who has an exceptional way with people and is very friendly with everyone, we understand that this is the right way to reach success.

I am still under the influence of this experience – our hosts were very friendly, open for all kinds of cooperation, full of plans how to learn from each other as much as possible. We made plans for a big meeting in Zagreb in the fall with representatives of RAB Serbia, marketing agencies and big clients from Serbia and Croatia, and all that with the goal to improve sails and position of radio stations.

In the next 15 days two great projects for which we have been preparing are waiting for us. Very soon you will be able to find the most detailed database of all radio stations in Serbia, with all the necessary information about every radio station and program which will enable all clients and marketing agencies to easily find radio stations with the required format and target group. The other project is research of radio listening. Final preparation before the start of the research are in progress.

The only thing left for me is to wish you as little rain as possible, a lot of Sun, and of course, a lot of clients.

INTRODUCTION - MAY http://rabsrbija.com/en/RAB-News/RAB-News/215/INTRODUCTION+-+MAY.html Our Radio Days are over. Like you, I’m still overwhelmed with impressions and full of joy - everything was even better than expected. I’ll start this article with the words I have finished Radio Days: „Great strength of RAB Serbia can be felt, one can feel that we all think the same, wish the same and are ready to fight for our goals with all our strength. After year and a half RAB Serbia’s unity is very visible. And my heart is full.“ ]]> This year Radio Days were held in Hotel Mona Zlatibor from April 22nd till April 24th. We had 82 representatives of radio stations, and this time our Radio Days were international. We had distinguished guests from the region, representatives of the biggest radio stations, networks and associations. I can proudly say that our guests were: Juraj Hrvacic, owner and director of Narodni radio, Totalni FM and Antena Zagreb, Ivan Butkovic, president of the association HURIN (Croatian association of radio and press), Josip Majher, owner of the Soundset network from Croatia, Adnan Osmanagic, owner and director of Radio Stari Grad, Sarajevo, Adis Kadric, executive director of Radio Stari Grad, Reuf Heric, president of association of commercial radio stations PEN from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Gjorgi Savev, owner of Radio City from Skopje. As always we had great help from IREX Serbia, and their representatives were also with us on Zlatibor.

We have worked in two groups. The first one was for owners and directors of radio stations members of RAB Serbia. Our guests from the region were also in this group. The moderator was Dusan Masic from BBC. We talked about challenges and perspectives for radio in 2012, strategic positioning of a station towards competitors, working at the time of crisis, marketing and program networks... In a very friendly atmosphere our guests shared their experiences. We have noticed that problems are the same everywhere, but that they are dealt differently. We got a lot of good advice about networks, but also about dealing with intellectual property and institutions dealing with that. Common conclusion was that we should organize as many of these gatherings as possible, and that it is necessary to connect the whole region.

In the other group Antena Zagreb’s team – Juraj Hrvacic Junior, program director, Dario Antunovic, content director and Ivana Miseric, radio host have prepared lectures for radio hosts and editors. Jura Hrvacic shared his knowledge and experiences of the leading radio station in the region with exceptional presentations. Juraj and Dario talked about all the aspects of good program – of the right way to choose topics to the way they should be presented. In an interesting and easy way they talked about the way to reach listeners, how to keep them listening, how to prepare the best possible morning show, and Ivana was very honest about her beginnings and the way she became radio star. She presented her radio show and the way she hosts one of the most interesting programs on Radio Antena.

Dragan Ilic, star of the morning show „Budjenje“, also had a lecture. In his specific way he presented his secrets of a good radio host, but he has also made everyone laugh with funny stories heard on air. Unique grade about the lecturers was pure 10.

Time spent on Zlatibor went by so fast – just like you are with best friends and when you have the same wishes, topics and concerns. At the end we said goodbye wishing to meet again soon, and prepare new topics about branding, production for our Autumn Radio Days. We plan to invite Rade Santrac and Ivan Zeljkovic, and to dedicate other session to radio and internet mix. We are planning our next Radio Days in October and I’m already looking forward to that.

In the near future we plan to visit Zagreb, Sarajevo and Skopje in order to improve cooperation in the region. I also expect more radio stations to join RAB Serbia. There is still time till summer vacations, there is a lot to be done...

And our RAB is standing strong.

INTRODUCTION - APRIL http://rabsrbija.com/en/RAB-News/RAB-News/214/INTRODUCTION+-+APRIL.html I’m still under the influence of everything I have seen and heard during Radio Days Europe held in Barcelona from March 14th till 16th at The Center of Contemporary Arts. There are so many things I could tell you about this meeting of radio lovers, but most of all I would like to share with you the enormous energy and enthusiasm felt in the Center located in the heart of Barcelona, near famous La Rambla. ]]> As representatives of RAB Serbia we were there together with over 700 other guests from 45 countries. 48 lectures were held and it was difficult to decide which one of four lectures held at the same time to choose because all of them were excellent, very usable and it was worth hearing and seeing radio stars from all over the world. Same as last year, we had big help from IREX Serbia, so Ivana Jordovic, Svetlana Tomov and I spent three days at the conference, enjoyed interesting lectures and spending time with radio people from all over the world. Pedja Andjelkovic from Radio S and Drago Majher from Hit Music FM were also present, so RAB Serbia had numerous representatives.

It was great to meet again with Clive from Absolute Radio, Stefan from RAB Finland, Susan, president of RAB Germany… I wish to share with you the atmosphere in which no one talked about the crisis, but about one thing only – yes, problems have been and still are the same all over the world, but future of radio is bright, big, promising… and all radio stations in the world are moving forward, towards even better programs, better morning shows, promotions, stronger connection with the Internet and social networks.

I have to admit that the best lecture for me was the one by Christian O’Conell, surely the biggest radio star in Barcelona. Christian has 8 Sony awards and he hosts probably the most famous Breakfast Show on Absolute Radio from UK. We have prepared for you a presentation of his lecture and I’m sure it will be very useful for everyone because morning show is maybe the most important part of the program. Christian’s Breakfast Show is a role model for many. It is certain that the reasons are his huge talent, he is the man with an exceptional sense of humor, entertainer, creative and with many ideas, but this lecture has inspired everyone who had heard it.

It was very interesting to see people like Dave Fox who creates great jingles, especially to see the way he does it. I was glad to see how humble he is during his lecture “Secrets of powerful imaging”. He showed us how he makes jingles for 40 years and they always prove to be the best, but with the sentence: “Here, that’s how I do it, it’s very easy, you see…”

In the last lecture I was present, named PD club, PDs from Denmark, France, Spain and Slovakia talked about the way they do their job and I have seen that daily issues organization are dealt with in the same way on all radio stations, the only difference being that on some radio stations hosts have a little more freedom, while in another they have directors who prepare content and hosts present what has been prepared. PD from Spain openly said: “When it comes to content I allow them to talk about what they think they should. But when it comes to music, I make all decisions.”

I think I could talk to you about Radio Days Europe for days. I’m sure we’ll have a chance to talk about all that during our Radio Days on Zlatibor from April 22nd till 24th, and I hope that we’ll be able to go in even bigger number to the next Radio Days Europe which will be in Berlin. It would be a wonderful chance to share experiences with the radio world and to accumulate some of that great energy which only comes from people who really love their job. I’m sure you share my opinion that those are radio people who do not hesitate to share their experiences, give advices and suggestions, working with only one goal – to make the best possible radio program all over the world.

INTRODUCTION - MARCH http://rabsrbija.com/en/RAB-News/RAB-News/213/INTRODUCTION+-+MARCH.html Seems to me spring is coming. I am sure it will bring a lot of good things to us. Maybe because of the spring and the nice symbolism we are beginning this year with the action called SPARROW (VRABAC). ]]> In our annual Assembly held on February 24th we were unanimous in the decision that the award for the best radio jingles and ads awarded by RAB Serbia should be named V(RAB)AC. I hope you already have your candidates ready because soon you will receive an invitation to enter the contest and then we shall all celebrate on the award ceremony. So, V(RAB)AC. I wish you all a lot of luck and that you bring the award to your radio and be proud of it.

It was nice to be the chairman of the Assembly. We all thought the same and wished for the same things. We have accepted the plan for this year and improved it with interesting, creative ideas.

We planed Radio Days on Zlatibor which will be held from April 22nd till April 24th. We are preparing trainings for radio hosts and editors, which was something everyone present desired.

You can imagine how happy I was when I have presented the latest estimates from IPSOS Strategic Marketing which we had received that day. I have proudly announced that we have already accomplished the goal set on December 15th 2010 in “Zira” – that we will reach 9.6 million Euro income for radio in 2012. 9 million in 2011 shows us that.

Incomes got higher, but it’s sure that there is a lot of work ahead of us to bring the radio to the place it belongs amongst other media. We shall fight for that! The numbers show that our fight is successful and that gives us additional strength.

RAB Serbia is entering its second year and this year is certainly going to be even more important than the previous. So – full speed ahead in all self promotional campaigns because everything is going good for us.

It was very interesting to meet Alida Zorz Miketek, director of Media Mix from Zagreb. She was our guest lecturer on the Assembly. Her lecture and the experience with the networks in Croatia was very precious to all of us. I am sure that there was no station thinking about “network – yes or no”.

Our guests from Zagreb (Alida Zorz Miketek, Ivan Juric Kacunic from Antena Zagreb, Daria Loos, assistant) showed us examples of how it is done by the biggest networks in Croatia – Narodni radio, Antena Zagreb and Totalni FM network. The overall conclusion was – the future of radio lies in networks, both for big and small radio stations. We shall do our best to bring other experiences about this to our next meetings and to make right decisions for our radio stations.

I wish you all a wonderful early spring… And the successful realization of all of our plans. Even though I’ve said this many times before, I would like to say it again – only together we can accomplish our biggest goals.

INTRODUCTION - FEBRUARY http://rabsrbija.com/en/RAB-News/RAB-News/212/INTRODUCTION+-+FEBRUARY.html January is over. Most certainly the most difficult month in a year – everybody is making plans, there are a lot of holidays and profits seem to stop. No matter how cold it is I’m sure February will be better, March will be much better, and after that everything will come back to life, just like nature. ]]> While waiting for the spring we are preparing a lot of nice activities. I’m looking forward to seeing you all at the annual Assembly planed around February 20th in Belgrade. At that time we shall accept the plan for the next year and move forward some new actions.

Preparations for the contest for the best radio jingles will start in February and soon we will invite all radio stations to send their candidates. The jury will choose the best in March and they will be announced at an award ceremony.

Spring Radio days are getting closer. In April we will once more learn from the best and enjoy the company of true radio lovers. We shall invite guests from foreign associations similar to ours and will spend quite a lot of time in exchanging experiences with them, and talking about everything important for radio stations.

In this Newsletter you have an opportunity to read analysis of the results we got from the research done by RAB Serbia and Glasanje.rs and with expert help from professor Miladin Kovacevic and his team.

We have a lot of plans, interesting actions, we want to learn as much as possible… I have no doubt that, same as last year, we will fulfill all our plans. We need a lot of good will, strength and optimism. I’m sure that that is always the best weapon.

INTRODUCTION - JANUARY http://rabsrbija.com/en/RAB-News/RAB-News/206/INTRODUCTION+-+JANUARY.html We have celebrated RAB Serbia’s first birthday. The atmosphere was just perfect for radio people - friendly, pleasant and with a lot of members, colleagues from Croatia, representatives of marketing agencies, IREX Serbia and all those who had helped and supported RAB. ]]> I am so proud to be the first president of RAB Serbia, and we already have many accomplishments, as well as ambitious plans for the next year.

At the time everyone is talking about economic crisis I am sure that radio will find its place and use its chance when many clients are cutting down their advertising budgets. They can chose radio as beloved and powerful media, much more affordable than other media.

Before his departure from Serbia Rich McClear has toasted RAB Serbia and wished us a lot of success, and told us not to be afraid of the crisis, that radio has been dismissed so many times before, but it had survived everything.

RAB Serbia has a new member of its Board because Marina Paunovic has become CoP of IREX Serbia, and Zorana Djokic, media buyer from marketing agency Direct Media, has replaced her in the Board. I am sure she will contribute to developing even better connections between radio and marketing agencies because we all have the same goals – satisfied clients and good ads.

At this moment, while I am looking at the results I am happy to say that almost 85% of people listen to radio daily, and most of them (82.3%) listen to the radio in their homes, through FM 61.5% and 24.4% on the Internet. The fact that 40.7% of those who took part in this survey listen to radio more than 180 minutes per day proves how much radio is loved and listened to. You have to admit that we can really be proud of these results!

Radio is second on the list of the most popular media, and 94.6% say that they are listening to the radio because of music, only 2.5% because of news, and 1.3% because of sport. It is interesting that listeners do not really care whether it is male or female radio host 71.3%). Women prefer male hosts and there is no significant difference with male listeners.

It is often said that listeners change the frequency because of the commercials. Our survey shows that listeners most often “leave” radio stations because of too much talk (41.3%). Second place goes to commercials (19.7%) but very close is music (19.3%). It is certain that this is one of the best indicators that commercials are not problematic and that listeners do not run away from them, but too much talk and poor music choice most certainly give opportunity to listeners to change the radio station.

I am sure you will study the tables carefully and that they will be very useful when creating strategy for program and sails.

I wish you all happy and successful 2012.

I wish for radio to reach a better position among other media and for RAB Serbia I wish to show the power of radio through new researches and constant promotions.

I wish you all a lot of commercials and financial success, I wish you the one thing we always say – for your radio station being the first in your listeners' hearts.

There is a lot of work ahead of us, but we must not forget the most important – we must stay TOGETHER and fight for the same goals, like we did in 2011. For RAB Serbia I wish many new members.

Good luck, with a smile and huge optimism into the new 2012!

Love,

Yours Maja

INTRODUCTION - DECEMBER http://rabsrbija.com/en/RAB-News/RAB-News/205/INTRODUCTION+-+DECEMBER.html I am still under the impression of our autumn Radio Days. Kovacica and 80 of us. Everybody smiling, in the good mood, radio people wishing to learn as much as possible, to socialize, to talk about good and bad experiences, to share everything with friends. ]]> A year! How quick it went.

Do you remember December 15th and the big hall in hotel Zira, where the first document showing our desire to form RAB Serbia had been signed?

Do you remember New Year gifts – brochures about radio tied with big red ribbons? It was a publication we had prepared for a long time.

I can’t wait to celebrate our first birthday with all of you, to remind ourselves of everything, to be proud of our successes, to plan new victories. We are already preparing guest lists and imagining our big birthday cake.

December and January are months for many celebrations and it is so wonderful that RAB Serbia was born at that time.

From 24th till 27th of November I was guest of Days of electronic media of Croatia and their 17th Radio Days held in Rovinj. I was invited by HURIN (Croatian association of radio and press).

I came back with lots of wonderful impressions, I’ve learnt a lot of interesting facts and I can’t wait to share them with you. I made a lot of contacts and I expect excellent cooperation between our two organizations.

We are already talking about our spring Radio Days. I’m sure it will give us the opportunity to share experiences with guests from Croatia as well. In Rovinj I have realized that radio is the same everywhere, problems are similar and radio is different from all the other media because of great live shining through all radio people.

So, happy birthday to us, to RAB Serbia. I can’t wait to see you all. Together we will put candles on our birthday cake.

Love,

Maja

INTRODUCTION - NOVEMBER http://rabsrbija.com/en/RAB-News/RAB-News/204/INTRODUCTION+-+NOVEMBER.html November 11th and our autumn Radio Days are getting closer. Almost a year ago, when we were making plans for our RAB, we imagined to organize a big yearly gathering of all RAB Serbia members called Radio Days. We wished for that to be a place where we could learn something new, share experiences and spend some time together. ]]> And after our first meeting like that on Zlatibor, this March, we have realized that it would be much better if we could meet at least twice a year.

We have found a great way to enable that for everyone. All radio stations participate in paying for the hotel by airing commercials for our hosts. This is one more way we have shown our unison.

Our autumn Radio Days will be in hotel Relax in Kovacica from November 11th till November 13th.

We will once more have lecturers we wished for. Bud Stiker, Rich McClear, Lenja Papp and Chris Price have prepared presentations about sails, radio promotion and sponsorship, radio in the media mix... We have prepared many good case studies, and we will also talk about the best way to edit music program.

We are expecting 70 participants. I know you are all looking forward to this, and I can’t wait to see you and hear all the great thoughts and ideas from you – people who most certainly love radio the most.

Did you take part in our survey about radio listening? You probably did, this is just a small reminder for those of you who haven’t filled the questionnaire yet. All radio stations members of RAB are broadcasting jingles which invite listeners to take their part in the survey and tell us what kind of radio they would like. Web site www.glasanje.rs is open and we expect great turn.

Regarding the research, I wish for all of you to be the first and the best, and you most certainly are and always will be in the hearts of your listeners.

And one more good news. RAB Serbia has 5 new members. I’m happy that Radio Platena and Radio 5 (Novi Sad), Radio Jugovic (Kac), Radio Srce (Prokuplje) and Radio Despotovac have joined us.

I wish you all great and successful November. I can’t wait to see you.

Love,

Yours Maja

INTRODUCTION - OCTOBER http://rabsrbija.com/en/RAB-News/RAB-News/203/INTRODUCTION+-+OCTOBER.html It is October. Another big project we are all looking for is coming closer. On Monday, October 17th our radio listening research will begin. We have been preparing it for a long time together with the web site www.glasanje.rs. ]]> For the first time in Serbia data will be gathered via the internet and all radio stations members of RAB Serbia, will broadcast radio jingles inviting listeners to take part in the research and win prizes.

We can’t wait for the first results which will be published on our web site!

This autumn we have a lot of wonderful tasks before us – our RAB is sailing full speed ahead. At the beginning of November we have our second Radio Days, this time dedicated to marketing, sales, promotion...

In hotel Mona on Zlatibor, for our first Radio Days we had 70 participants, and I expect there will be more radio lovers this time.

We are glad Bud Stiker, Rich McClear and Lenja Papp will join us. Their lectures are always very interesting for everyone.

And maybe the most important thing – we will be all together which is the best opportunity for us to exchange experiences, knowledge and to get to know each other.

Because – we are all radio!

Love,

Yours Maja

INTRODUCTION - SEPTEMBER http://rabsrbija.com/en/RAB-News/RAB-News/202/INTRODUCTION+-+SEPTEMBER.html I love September. September always marks some kind of beginning. Maybe that’s the association because of the beginning of the school year. Everybody comes back refreshed, tanned, with lots of new ideas and new energy. ]]> I’m sure you all had wonderful vacations, and now is the time to think about some new additions to our radio programs – there are autumn formats, interviews, maybe some new shows... September is the perfect time for that.

For RAB Serbia this was a working summer.

We have been finishing our web site, worked on finding as much good case studies and ideas for you to implement in your radio stations, to organize some nice promotions, but also to make some completely new strategy for sails.

The times are not easy, they have never been, but good ideas and determinations always win. You know that.

We plan many activities for this autumn.

We are looking forward to our new radio listening research via Internet, which will provide new information about radio listening and which will you certainly be able to implement. We are also preparing our Radio Days for October.

I can already see us listening to presentations and soaking in new knowledge.

I can’t wait for promotions of RAB Serbia in the towns of Serbia, where we will certainly meet and share our ideas to radio stations, our future members.

Looking forward to seeing you soon.

Love,

Yours Maja

Long Hot Summer http://rabsrbija.com/en/RAB-News/RAB-News/223/Long+Hot+Summer+.html I know very well that on 35 degrees you don’t feel like doing anything. But there is no relaxation in this radio business of ours. Our game lasts 365 days per year, and every four year we get an extra day in February. Summer is the time when your program can “relax” a little and “run lose”, but unfortunately that is the way most of the advertisers think too. They too want to “run lose”, but only because you let them… ]]> On the contrary. The fact is that all big advertisers usually talk about preparing their campaigns for „when the school begins“, but this crisis are making even the most successfull ones to work more (for the same money). It is even more dramatic with small and medium companies that provide living for most radio stations. They need your help the most, and that is what your salespersons are giving them. They help your clients achive their business goals. That is moslty shown through numbers of seconds and slots sold, but it is not necesserily always so.

image1

Despite the heat, summer is ideal time for radio to „go out“ of „the magic box“ and meet its listeners. Finally, they are the users of products and services of your advertisers and this is that magic triangle (radio – listener – advertiser) in which this whole story of ours is happening. Everything we do is aimed only to one goal – for your advertisers’ message to reach your listeners. By “going out” you give your listeners chance to see your advertisers.

Additional good thing about this is that activities like that are so called „below the line“ for your advertisers. It means that they are allowing additional means from the budget for your radio. Naimly, every major advertiser has „bellow the line“ (BTL) and „above the line“ (ATL) budgets. Traditional radio advertising (sponsorships, jingles and quizes) are ATL, while events and PR are BTL. By „going out“ you give advertiser a chance to combine those two budgets and you are killing two flies at once. You get your money and advertiser gets a chance for direct communication with potential clients.

So, it is up to you to think about your listeners are gathering and which kind of advertisers you can include in this action. Plan longterm, because investing in moveable equipment is worth only in longterm. Pay attention to the smallest of details, like having equipment with your’s and advertiser’s logo with hook-and-loop fastener instead of printed. You will get requisets for more uses.

Broadcasting from open space can improve your relationship with advertisers in the best possible way. If you can attract enough people for an event like that, of course. You will achieve that through promotion on air. Program editors are sometimes afraid that those kind of actions could „eat” the regular program, and that they would annoy listeners who don’t want to go where you would like them to go. There will be those for sure, but keep in mind that every listener satisfied after one event of that kind will become your promoter and will share the nice experience with at least four other persons. The same goes for advertisers.

You will get the confirmation of this in the autumn research. Keep in mind, those who have seen you will be louder then those who have heard you. Those who shook your hand will be more loyal than those who have seen you. After all, politicains are the first who had started with „door to door“ activities and handshakes with the voters. No matter what we think of them, we can learn something even from them.

So, forget the heat and find your place under the Sun. Invite your listeners and advertisers to join you. You will have good time for sure, and the sweets part will be when you see the improvement on your bank account. And one more thing, don’t forget to share that experience with your competition who do not feel like doing anything these days.
